TIFFANY CAOWeb Liaison
Tiffany is a bioengineering major on the pre-med track from Potomac, Maryland. She is interested in pediatrics and becoming a physician later on in her career. On campus, she is actively involved with the UMCP Vietnamese Student Association as their Public Relations Chair and the Gemstone Student Council. In her spare time, she enjoys playing volleyball and having bubble tea! |
VICTORIA HAASSLibrary Liaison
Victoria is a physiology and neurobiology major from Potomac, Maryland. She is interested in researching neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease. In her free time, she enjoys watching Netflix, running, and cooking. She also loves participating in the various 5K runs and other events at UMD throughout the year. |
TOM KARIYILTom is a physiology/neurobiology major from Olney, MD. As a Catholic and aspiring doctor, he hopes to study medicine and bring God's love and healing to the sick and needy in the future. At UMD, he is involved in the Charles R. Drew Pre-Health society and the Catholic Terps. A few of his hobbies are playing music, reading, playing basketball, and spending time with family.

SAMANTHA KENNEDYTeam Liaison
Sam Kennedy is a public health science major from Wallingford, CT. She is interested in researching health epidemics, vaccines, or becoming a nurse practitioner. Besides Gemstone, she is involved at the Catholic student center, works at Eppley, and is a member of Delta Epsilon Mu. She enjoys doing yoga, cooking with her family, and going to sports events at UMD. Her favorite part of research is learning new lab techniques and sharing findings with others. |
CARLY ROSENFELDCarly Rosenfeld is a Cellular Biology and Genetics major with a minor in Spanish. Outside of her involvement with Gemstone, she is playing Club Lacrosse or works as a Kiln Technician at Stamp.

MATTHEW SANDRUCKMatthew is a Biology major from Baltimore, MD who is on a pre-pharmacy track in order to fulfill his aspirations of becoming a clinical pharmacist. On campus, he is involved in pre-pharmacy club, intramural soccer, and club rugby. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, kayaking, soccer, and photography.

Mentor Liaison
Aza is a microbiology major from Frederick, Maryland. She is also interested in women’s health and is looking towards a career in obstetrics and gynecology. Besides being in Gemstone, she is actively involved in the Taiwanese American Student Association and is their representative in the Asian American Student Union (AASU). She also loves being an America Reads mentor at the local elementary school. In Aza’s spare time, she enjoys running, reading, and singing. |
Madina Smagulova is a Sophomore studying Physiology and Neurobiology. She joined Gemstone because of the unique and boundless research opportunity. Once she completes her studies at UMD, she hopes to attend medical school and work in the field of Pediatrics. On campus, she is involved in the Residence Hall Association.

Margo Sybert is a Neurobiology and Physiology major from Bel Air, Maryland. She is interested in attending medical school after her undergraduate years at Maryland to become a hospital physician. Other than Gemstone, she is involved in the Survivor Club and is interesting in joining other pre-health organizations. She enjoys drawing, playing rugby, and researching all things antibiotics. |
SYONA TULADHARSyona is a Neurobiology-Physiology and Psychology double major from Silver Spring, MD. She hopes to go onto medical school to pursue an MD. On campus, she is involved in the American Red Cross Club as treasurer and UMD Medlife. Outside of school, she enjoys running, listening to music and traveling.

JUSTIN WUJustin is currently a neurobiology and physiology major but is pursuing a business degree. Born in Rockville, Maryland, he is interested in accounting and economics and is interested in finding a job in the business field. Aside from Gemstone, Justin is an active member of Phi Delta Sigma Fraternity as well as Taiwanese Student Association. In his spare time, he enjoys lifting weights at the gym, playing volleyball, and going outdoors.

Dr. Aranda-Espinoza is Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at UMD. He received his P.h.D. from the Universidad de San Luis Potosi in 1998. |
